What to Expect on your Initial Oral Exam

During the initial oral examination, you will begin by filling out some paperwork to help us understand your needs and past dental care. Providing your dental insurance details allows us to optimize your coverage. If you have questions about accepted insurance or cash patient offers, feel free to contact us.

Following the paperwork, you will undergo radiographs (x-rays), including bitewing and panoramic views, to detect hidden decay or root and bone issues. Notify our staff if you are pregnant for proper shielding during radiographs. The ADA and ACOG agree that dental radiographs are safe during pregnancy with appropriate protection, but you can opt to wait until after giving birth.

After the radiographs, a hygienist or dentist will clean your teeth before the examination, removing plaque and polishing your teeth for a radiant smile. The dentist will then check for gum health, decay, and other oral issues. Any discomfort or concerns should be communicated for a thorough diagnosis.

Any findings requiring attention will be promptly discussed, and further appointments will be scheduled as needed. Your options will be explained to ensure you are well informed and confident in your treatment plan. Our aim is to provide you with a beautiful, healthy smile efficiently and comfortably.

We welcome a wide range of dental insurance plans, so remember to inquire before booking your appointment. If you're in search of a new dental practice, your search ends here! Contact us today at 707-416-4875 to arrange your first oral examination!

Initial Oral Exam FAQ

What Happens during an Oral Exam?

In an oral examination, the dentist assesses dental and gum health by examining for plaque and tartar accumulation on the teeth and along the gum line. These sticky and unseen substances naturally accumulate on teeth over time.

How long is an oral exam?

The duration of a dental examination varies based on the individual's oral health condition. On average, an oral exam typically lasts around 45 minutes.

What are the components of a comprehensive dental examination?

A thorough dental examination goes beyond assessing tooth decay and gum health; it also includes a detailed inspection of your entire mouth, head, and neck region. Typically conducted for new patients, this comprehensive exam should also be part of regular check-ups with a dentist you have been seeing for an extended period.
